Physiotherapy

Active Life Physiotherapy caters to everyone such as: athletes, the elderly, pre- or post-natal women, people with arthritis, those looking to improve their balance, post surgical clients, and many more.  If you are not sure if physiotherapy is right for you, please contact us to discuss your condition first.  You do not need a doctor’s referral to see a physiotherapist. On your first visit you will be asked to give a detailed background of your medical history. Next you will recieve a thorough examination of your injured body part and any other areas that may be related to your injury.

Your physiotherapist will then explain your condition and discuss a treatment plan with you and your expected length of recovery.  Treatment may consist of exercise, manual therapy, ultrasound or other electrotherapy, acupuncture, and education on how to manage your condition.  Your physiotherapist will communicate with any relevant health care practitioners when necessary.  Please bring appropriate clothing to your visit (i.e., shorts if you have injured any part of your lower extremity or back, and a tank top or bra top if you have injured your shoulder, neck, or mid-back).

Video Gait Analysis

Who: Runners and walkers of any level, triathletes.

Goals:
1. To provide visual feedback on running or walking gait.
2. To identify any anomalies that may predispose one to injury.
3. To provide recommendations on gait correction, preventative exercise and footwear.

Why be assessed by a physiotherapist?
The average runner has a cadence of 60 steps per minute.  That means that in a 30-minute run, each foot will hit the ground 1800 times!  Runners no doubt sustain a high rate of overuse injuries.  Many of these can be prevented by analyzing one’s running technique.  The typical gait analysis on the market today is done by a pedorthist, with a focus on the foot and determining the correct footwear.  The rest of the body is ignored.  A physiotherapist, a movement specialist, will analyze your entire gait pattern, including the foot.  More often than not, what we think is a foot problem, is related to a problem further up the kinetic chain, say in the knee, hip, or pelvis.  It makes sense to look at the bigger picture.  The physiotherapists at Active Life are experienced runners and biomechanical experts.

What to expect:
Prior to the video analysis, your history of injuries, footwear, training regime, and goals will be discussed.  On the treadmill, you will be filmed walking and running with and without footwear. You will be viewed from the front, back and side to identify any patterns which may predispose you to injury.  Once completed, the video will be viewed at regular and slow speeds, and the results discussed with the physiotherapist.  You will be provided with a printed summary of the analysis of your running pattern and recommendations.  In addition, you will receive a DVD copy of your assessment with audio commentary and any relevant exercise prescription.  Please allow one hour and bring shorts and a T-shirt.

*note: many extended health plans cover physiotherapy services, including gait analysis

Preventative Performance Evaluation

Who: any athlete, recreational or competitive, interested in injury prevention.

Why be assessed by a physiotherapist?
There is considerable research showing that by the time athletes reach adulthood, they have established abnormal movement patterns and adaptations (i.e., “physical baggage”) that may predispose one to injury.  By discovering these problems early on, the athlete can work on correcting them and reduce the risk of injury.  Athletes often continue to train through pain, making the injury worse, which contributes to other secondary injuries.  An untreated injury (i.e., old ankle sprain) that was not fully rehabilitated, may lead to further injuries of the same or other body part.  Also, moving in a biomechanically efficient way saves energy, making the body a more efficient training machine.  Physiotherapists are movement specialists and can identify any malalignments or muscle imbalances that may predispose you to injury, and help you correct them.

Prevent injuries = efficient training = better results

Goals:
1. To identify physical attributes that may predispose one to injury
2. To make recommendations in order to create symmetry in the athlete, enhance and improve flexibility, functional strength, and skilled movement
3. To minimize or solve pain-related problems

What to expect:
The individual assessment incorporates various tests including posture, muscle balance, joint-specific flexibility, core strength, and endurance.  You will be provided with a printed summary of the assessment and recommendations.  The assessment is based on the screening tool used for the SportMedBC provincial team functional screening.  Please allow one hour and bring shorts and a T-shirt.

*note: many extended health plans cover physiotherapy services, including sports screening assessments.

Bike Fit Analysis

Who: Cyclists of any type and ability, mountain bikers, road cyclists, cyclocross riders, commuters.

Why be assessed by a physiotherapist?
Research indicates that injuries can be prevented with proper posture and positioning on the bike.  Cycling is very repetitive; during 60-minutes of cycling, a rider may perform more than 5000 pedal revolutions!  No wonder the incidence of overuse injuries in cyclists is high!  The smallest amount of malalignment, whether due to extrinsic factors, such as incorrect bike fit and technique errors, or intrinsic factors, such as the rider’s biomechanical faults and muscle imbalances, or a combination of factors, can easily lead to overuse injuries.  A physiotherapist, a movement specialist, will be able to identify all intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may contribute to overuse injuries.  The physiotherapists at Active Life Physiotherapy are experienced cyclists and biomechanical experts.

Goals:
1. To provide visual feedback on your cycling position and pattern
2. To identify any positions or cycling patterns that may predispose you to injury
3. To provide recommendations on optimal cycling position, ideal movement patterns and any recommendations for specific exercises to correct any imbalances.

What to expect:
Prior to the video analysis, your history of injuries, riding history, training regime, and goals will be discussed.  You will be set up on the trainer with your bike to warm up and you will be filmed riding your bike from the front, back and side to identify any positions or movement patterns that may predispose you to injury.  Once completed, the video will be viewed at regular and slow speeds, and the results discussed with your physiotherapist.  Positions to optimize performance and power and prevent injury will be discussed.  You will be provided with a printed summary of the analysis of your cycling pattern and position on the bike with recommendations to optimize your position.  In addition, you will receive a DVD copy of your assessment with audio commentary and any relevant exercise prescription.  Please allow one hour and bring your bike, cycling shorts, and your cycling shoes.

*note: many extended health plans cover physiotherapy services, including bike fit analysis
