Berry Best of the Season

Summer is in full swing and so is berry season.  Local raspberries, blueberries and soon the second crop of strawberries are available in grocery stores and markets.  Besides tasting great, berries are a source of flavonoids – a type of antioxidant.  Antioxidants protect our cells from damage that happens naturally as we age but also when we are exposed to pollution or cigarette smoke. Enjoy berries on their own or try one of these ideas for including more berries in your diet (use frozen berries when fresh are not available):

 

  •  use as a topping for oatmeal, cereal, pancakes or waffles
  • add to smoothies, salads or quinoa and couscous
  •  top lean grilled meats with a blueberry sauce

 

For an easy summer dessert when entertaining, serve a mixed berry salad topped with Lemon Yogurt Cream (recipe below)

 

LEMON YOGURT CREAM

1 cup/250 ml               low fat Greek yogurt

¼ cup/50 ml                granulated sugar (this can be reduced if desired)

1 tsp/ 5 ml                   grated lemon rind

1 tbsp/15 ml                lemon juice (optional)

 

Stir together yogurt, sugar, rind and juice (if using).  Makes 1 cup (250 ml)
